When I heard about Veena stores first, I had thought what kind of an eatery would be named like this. Someone asked me ‘what do you like to eat in Veena stores’? I was confused. What do you get in Veena stores? Pencils? Crayons? Turns out, you cannot judge a place by its name, just like how you should not judge a book by its cover. What seems like the name of some boring stationary shop is in fact the hot spot where Bengaluru enjoys its best breakfast.

Veena stores first started as a condiment store in 1977. Later, it changed into an eatery but still retained its name. The place has been consistent in serving the best vegetarian south Indian breakfast. So much is the fan following for this humble place that people queue in lines at as early as 6 in the morning to relish what can be said as the best idlis in Bengaluru.

The hotel so tiny that you may miss it if you are not paying attention. It is similar to a small provision store. The line of people is what will tell you that you have arrived at your destination. We went to the place at 7 in the morning and there were already ten people waiting in the line.

This place serves all types of old school Karnataka breakfast delicacies like idli vada, bisibelebath, pongal, shavige bath and so on. We took idli vada and pongal. The idli was so soft and melt- in- mouth that we order one more. The vada were rather soggy. Pongal was very delicious, just like home made one.

The breakfast is served on plates made of hard leaves. You just have to stand in front of the counter and eat on the footpath. This may sound strange, but we were at it, people came in Harley Davidson and Benz cars to eat at this place. So, you don’t have to worry about eating on the footpath.

You know that awkward moment when you have to ask for more chutney while you are eating idlis in a hotel? You will never face that moment in this place. Because Veena stores loves their customers so much that they have sat a staff outside the counter just to serve chutney for whoever asks for it. You just have to place your plate in front of him and he’ll pour a ladle of fresh chutney into your plate.

And do not forget to drown down your food with a cup of their world famous filter coffee. It is absolutely refreshing and perfectly kicky.

This place is an example of how taste is the ultimate winner, not ambience, not posh buildings or staff speaking English in foreign accent. I’ll give this place a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The value for money is also pretty good.

When you think of Andhra food, you think of Nagarjuna. So, much is the popularity of this place and its cuisine. Nagarjuna is as much Andhra in its style as the famous hero of the same name is. The ambience is simple and typical to those family restaurants we always visit. Nothing over the top or unique. But, the place is always buzzing with people. Especially on Sundays, you will not get a table without waiting.

In places like these, the food all you can talk about is the food because the staff, service, ambience are pretty much the same. We ordered chilly chicken, chicken Nagarjuna roast, kheema fry, pepper chicken and kebabs. Quite an order I must say. But the number of empty stomachs were also more this time.

The chilly chicken was just the right amount of spicy and soft. Many restaurants just throw in a bunch of chilies because it is called as chilly chicken. Only god must save the people who indulge in those extra spicy dishes. Have to say this place knows its limits when it comes to people’s tolerating quotient. The chicken Nagarjuna roast was drizzling with spices and pepper. It was a better order than the pepper chicken I must say. The kheema balls were pretty looking and tasted extra soft and extra yummy. The kebabs were too good to be true.

Then came the chapatti and the chicken curry. I’ll have to say these weren’t up to the mark. Especially after the marvelous starters, this seemed like a dull middle. To end the meal, we ordered chicken biryani. The rice was cooked perfectly and the spices were in the right proportions, not too much or not too little.

We skipped dessert because this place is for food, not desserts. I give this place a 4 out of 5 stars. The place surely serves finest Andhra food. But, a little bit of cleanliness will certainly be appreciated.

Dessert time! Monsoon and desserts is an everlasting love story. If ever you are on the residency road, there is this nice little place called the art of delight, do make it a point to drop by. It is a vibrant and youthful place that attracts college goers and young crowd who love their desserts. They serve the holy trinity of waffles, ice creams and milkshakes. There are sundaes, cakes and cookies too.

Just next to the very famous Nagarjuna on the residency road, you can see an interesting board quoting Oscar Wilde “I can resist everything except temptation”. Well that’s an interesting quote, especially for someone who has never resisted temptation. So, I followed the board into this nice little place that looked like a patisserie I France. Colourful indoor, outdoor and first floor seating was provided to choose from.

There is this large chalk board behind the counter that displays the delights of the day. You can randomly choose because I bet all of them would taste mind-blowing anyway. We bought ourselves a nutella skillet sundae and chocolate hysteria.

IMG_6400.JPG

The sundae was a scoop of Wayanad vanilla ice cream on top of a freshly baked skillet cookie with a nutella filled center. This was topped with nutella. All in all it was a nutella laced happiness. The skillet cookie was so delicious that I could eat it all day.

The chocolate hysteria was an amalgamation of brownie crumbles, Belgian chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream. If that is not enough, there are chocolate fudge, chocolate chips, roasted nuts, white chocolate and nutella on top. The blueberry cheese cake is just all kinds of awesome. Hmmm, this place definitely sticks to its name because they know the art of delighting their customers.

Too bad I went to this place after a nice meal. But, there is always anther time. It is a nice place to relax and have a shake will you chill with your friends. One more interesting thing is the place displays art work of some brilliant artists. These painting are for sale if you would love to buy. Service is swift and friendly. I’ll give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m coming back again until I have had one of everything on the menu.
