Bangalore is a fascinating city. It is like a drug – addictive, thrilling and always gets you high. Living in Bangalore has its own perks. One such thing is the presence of some of the nicest eat outs that you can find in the country. They are so cool in ambience and consistent in taste. When I talk about good places to eat, I cannot help but mention Hakuna Matata. This place is one of my favourites. And it is one of the few places that me and my husband both agree with (trust me, we do not do that often).

1

Hakuna Matata means “no worries” in Swahili. They named the place so probably because it is a wonderful place where you will forget all your worries. It is located in the crowded area of j p nagar. But, surprisingly, the place is very vast and spacious. You can just drive in, park your vehicle and walk into the hotel. The building is open and there is free movement of air, light and people. You can also opt for the outdoor seating. We sat under the star during our first visit, but that was in the evening. This time, we were there for lunch, so we chose a corner table on the ground floor which was a no smoking floor.

2

The ambience is raw and jungle kind of a thing. There are bamboo tables and chairs. There is wood and bamboo art on the wall. It’s simple, yet pleasing. But, what is liked the most about the place is its food. It is absolutely mind blowing. They are very consistent in their taste and hygiene. We have been here a couple of times and every time, the food fantastic. The staff is friendly and courteous.

We ordered crispy chilli vegetables, paneer satay, dragon chicken and shredded crispy chilli chicken for starters. Each and every starter was tasty and we gorged on every last bit of it. The first time we had been here, we had ordered chicken biryani because the staff suggested it. Trust me, I was very skeptical about it. hakuna matata and chicken biryani? Somehow, the names didn’t go very well together. But believe me, the biryani was mind blowing. The chicken in the rice was so well cooked, juicy and spicy. The rice had all the necessary flavours of Indian spices. So, whenever one of our friends go out here, we recommend their biryani very strongly. The vegetable Szechwan fried rice was also tasty.

Desserts must be mandatory in places like Hakuna Matata. We had their fried ice cream which is just out of the word. The walnut toffee with ice cream was also good. All in all, the lunch was a wonderful experience. The place gets a high 4.7 out of 5 stars. also, do not forget to pay a visit to the french looking cake cafe at the entrance of the place.

If you want to spend some lonely, quiet time, then head to the biryani café in Banashankari. The place is a feel good café with some tasty dishes to try out. It brings back the memory of our old Bangalore that was untouched by the software industry and all those Silicon Valley aspirations. Our humble Bangalore may not be recreated anytime soon, but you can reminisce those good old days as you see the walls of the café.

The place is small, cozy and welcoming. Music played is good and you suddenly feel at home when you enter the place. The menu is simple and short. There are no great gourmet dishes on the list. Nothing that you have not seen or heard of. But yet, the food is extremely tasty and you will want to try more.

With all those fancy restaurants trying out new types of dishes, you are missing out on the humble native dishes like our Donne biryani. If ever you want to eat those dishes that remind you of your mom’s cooking, our culture or our life in the 90’s, you will have to give this place a visit. I especially liked their pepper chicken which was extra spicy and delicious and their Donne biryani. It had all the flavors that an authentic biryani just possess.

Imagine eating in the middle of skeletons, wrecked ships and pirates. You would think that you will not have the appetite to do so. But, here is a place where the ambiance is strange, but surprisingly, it does not at all bother you. In fact, the place makes the food all the more interesting. I am talking about the black pearl. It has two branches in Bangalore one in koramangala and another in marathalli.

Black pearl is unique. Not just because of its name, ambiance or food, but the entire feeling about the place make you want to come back again. As you enter the place, you know that it is going to be an interesting night. For me, the dinner will always be special because we cousins were meeting for a sendoff party for our cousin who was flying abroad for work. The place is well decked up with pirate statues, treasure boxes, skeletons, wooden planks and other accessories that make it look like an abandoned ship. The staff welcome you and introduce you to their menu. I just loved the attention that the staff paid to each one of us.

Coming to the food, we has starters on barbeque to begin with. The starters kept coming until we were actually full. There was live band and the songs selected were simply wonderful. They had emu, octopus, rabbit and squids too, but I did not taste any one of them. However, the chicken, fish and mutton dishes were fresh and yummy.

Well, the main course was simple, yet tasty. Many places which boast of lavish buffets do not provide basic level of taste when it comes to main course. But, black pearl is an exception in this case. They have delicious biryani, curd rice, bread, gravies and curries spread out for you.

And then, here comes my favorite part. The desserts! I will have to say that the black pearl takes the cake when it comes to desserts. They have the most interesting desserts like chocolate sandwich. Paan pudding, vermicelli lollipop, coconut balls, chocolate lollipop, malai chocolate, gulab jamun, and pastries. Trust me, you can eat just the desserts and you will be satisfied.

Live counters make the best mini burgers, sandwiches, chats and sea food that you can choose. I always thought that the barbeque nation was my favorite buffet place until I came here. Now this is my hot favorite buffet destination. I give a 4.5 out of five stars for this wonderful place.
