Food is like vacation to me. Whenever we are eating out, I plan the entire thing up until the dessert. I decide where we go, what we drink and what we eat. But, there are some occasions when you go to a place without planning anything just because you were out on work and it’s time to eat. One such occasion was when I went to Fattoush. The place is named after an Arabian salad. This told me loud and clear that it was an Arabian hotel. But I wanted to try something new. So, in I went.

The ambience was clean, plain and airy. The place was empty when we entered because it was long after the regular lunch time. We sat at a table and ordered. The staff were courteous and brought the food swiftly just as we had insisted.

IMG_6677.JPG

We ordered the Arabian chicken soup. It was a clear soup with a tinge of parsley and chunks of chicken. It was a nice, hot bowl of soup. Then came their very famous red dragon chicken. It was a very succulent dragon chicken. The spices were just about right. The chicken biryani which came next was nothing new from the regular biryani that we eat in India. I expected something different from an Arabian restaurant. All in all, the food was good.IMG_6679.JPG

I regret not eating the Fattoush when I was at Fattoush. I give this place a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I think this place deserves more compliments than it gets.

When I heard about Veena stores first, I had thought what kind of an eatery would be named like this. Someone asked me ‘what do you like to eat in Veena stores’? I was confused. What do you get in Veena stores? Pencils? Crayons? Turns out, you cannot judge a place by its name, just like how you should not judge a book by its cover. What seems like the name of some boring stationary shop is in fact the hot spot where Bengaluru enjoys its best breakfast.

Veena stores first started as a condiment store in 1977. Later, it changed into an eatery but still retained its name. The place has been consistent in serving the best vegetarian south Indian breakfast. So much is the fan following for this humble place that people queue in lines at as early as 6 in the morning to relish what can be said as the best idlis in Bengaluru.

The hotel so tiny that you may miss it if you are not paying attention. It is similar to a small provision store. The line of people is what will tell you that you have arrived at your destination. We went to the place at 7 in the morning and there were already ten people waiting in the line.

This place serves all types of old school Karnataka breakfast delicacies like idli vada, bisibelebath, pongal, shavige bath and so on. We took idli vada and pongal. The idli was so soft and melt- in- mouth that we order one more. The vada were rather soggy. Pongal was very delicious, just like home made one.

IMG_6941.JPG

The breakfast is served on plates made of hard leaves. You just have to stand in front of the counter and eat on the footpath. This may sound strange, but we were at it, people came in Harley Davidson and Benz cars to eat at this place. So, you don’t have to worry about eating on the footpath.

You know that awkward moment when you have to ask for more chutney while you are eating idlis in a hotel? You will never face that moment in this place. Because Veena stores loves their customers so much that they have sat a staff outside the counter just to serve chutney for whoever asks for it. You just have to place your plate in front of him and he’ll pour a ladle of fresh chutney into your plate.

And do not forget to drown down your food with a cup of their world famous filter coffee. It is absolutely refreshing and perfectly kicky.

This place is an example of how taste is the ultimate winner, not ambience, not posh buildings or staff speaking English in foreign accent. I’ll give this place a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The value for money is also pretty good.

When you think of Andhra food, you think of Nagarjuna. So, much is the popularity of this place and its cuisine. Nagarjuna is as much Andhra in its style as the famous hero of the same name is. The ambience is simple and typical to those family restaurants we always visit. Nothing over the top or unique. But, the place is always buzzing with people. Especially on Sundays, you will not get a table without waiting.

In places like these, the food all you can talk about is the food because the staff, service, ambience are pretty much the same. We ordered chilly chicken, chicken Nagarjuna roast, kheema fry, pepper chicken and kebabs. Quite an order I must say. But the number of empty stomachs were also more this time.

The chilly chicken was just the right amount of spicy and soft. Many restaurants just throw in a bunch of chilies because it is called as chilly chicken. Only god must save the people who indulge in those extra spicy dishes. Have to say this place knows its limits when it comes to people’s tolerating quotient. The chicken Nagarjuna roast was drizzling with spices and pepper. It was a better order than the pepper chicken I must say. The kheema balls were pretty looking and tasted extra soft and extra yummy. The kebabs were too good to be true.

Then came the chapatti and the chicken curry. I’ll have to say these weren’t up to the mark. Especially after the marvelous starters, this seemed like a dull middle. To end the meal, we ordered chicken biryani. The rice was cooked perfectly and the spices were in the right proportions, not too much or not too little.

We skipped dessert because this place is for food, not desserts. I give this place a 4 out of 5 stars. The place surely serves finest Andhra food. But, a little bit of cleanliness will certainly be appreciated.

Dessert time! Monsoon and desserts is an everlasting love story. If ever you are on the residency road, there is this nice little place called the art of delight, do make it a point to drop by. It is a vibrant and youthful place that attracts college goers and young crowd who love their desserts. They serve the holy trinity of waffles, ice creams and milkshakes. There are sundaes, cakes and cookies too.

Just next to the very famous Nagarjuna on the residency road, you can see an interesting board quoting Oscar Wilde “I can resist everything except temptation”. Well that’s an interesting quote, especially for someone who has never resisted temptation. So, I followed the board into this nice little place that looked like a patisserie I France. Colourful indoor, outdoor and first floor seating was provided to choose from.

There is this large chalk board behind the counter that displays the delights of the day. You can randomly choose because I bet all of them would taste mind-blowing anyway. We bought ourselves a nutella skillet sundae and chocolate hysteria.

IMG_6400.JPG

The sundae was a scoop of Wayanad vanilla ice cream on top of a freshly baked skillet cookie with a nutella filled center. This was topped with nutella. All in all it was a nutella laced happiness. The skillet cookie was so delicious that I could eat it all day.

IMG_6401

The chocolate hysteria was an amalgamation of brownie crumbles, Belgian chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream. If that is not enough, there are chocolate fudge, chocolate chips, roasted nuts, white chocolate and nutella on top. The blueberry cheese cake is just all kinds of awesome. Hmmm, this place definitely sticks to its name because they know the art of delighting their customers.

IMG_6392.JPG

Too bad I went to this place after a nice meal. But, there is always anther time. It is a nice place to relax and have a shake will you chill with your friends. One more interesting thing is the place displays art work of some brilliant artists. These painting are for sale if you would love to buy. Service is swift and friendly. I’ll give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m coming back again until I have had one of everything on the menu.

This place had been bookmarked for a long time. But, as they say ‘you will get there when you are meant to get there and not a moment sooner’. So, the moment had finally arrived. A group of youngsters headed towards Onesta Koramngala, on a cold Saturday evening. There are eight branches of this place all over Bangalore and one more in the making. And, one noticeable thing about all their branches is that, they all have the same kind of positive reputation.

The place is easy to locate (especially when you have your GPS on). There is valet parking, which is such a relief. Like many other places in the locality, Onesta too is created in a small, what might have been a residential space earlier. The ambience is fun and bright. There are too many lights, too much positive energy and lots of people too. They do not make reservations on weekends and it is a first come first serve basis. Luckily we got a table as soon as we entered. The place consists of two floors, the ground floor and the rooftop. We chose the lively rooftop. The grilled walls were lined with plants and the wooden tables gave a feel of some outdoor dining experience.

We had chosen the unlimited offer and we could eat and drink anything on the menu any number of times. If someone had told me ten minutes earlier that I would eat those many pizzas, I would have laughed in their face. But, as the pizzas kept coming, we kept eating. The pizzas were made of the thinnest thin crusts. The toppings were good. They were small in size and thus we could try almost all the pizzas on the menu. From the plain Margherita pizza to the chocolate and banana pizza, every pizza was toothsome. There is not much on the menu other than pizza. Bruschetta, lasagna and ravioli were not very appreciable. The herbed wedges and jalapeno cheese balls were delicious. But, one thing is sure, this place is for pizza and only pizza.

The desserts were good too. They were tiny, yet tasty. The caramel walnut tart was just so amazing. So were the dark chocolate and peanut mousse and cheese cake. The drinks like green apple cooler, virgin mojito and peach iced tea were a good combination with the pizzas. Loved their frothy, hot chocolate drink.

This place has great value for money and a very courteous bunch of people serving you. I will give this place a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Visit once if you are a pizza lover.

There might be many rulers fighting for the iron throne, but when it comes to the throne of “the best Dosa in Bangalore” there are only two strong contestants. The MTR and the CTR. While I am a true blood MTRian, my husband just loves CTR. So, I am dragged to the place quite often. I am not complaining because I do love their Masala Dosa.

IMG_5995.JPG

CTR is an acronym for central tiffin room. This humble hotel was started in the 1920s by Y.V. Subramanyam and brothers. When the then Maharaja of Mysore visited the place, Y.V. Subramanyam served breakfast in a traditional attire and impressed the king. Subramanyam is also the founder president of the Bangalore Hoteliers Association. Today, the hotel is owned by someone else, but the simple building, its mere interiors, a vintage wall clock and modest rosewood furniture still have the essence of the old Bangalore that we all so badly miss.

img_5993.jpg

After the Y.V. brothers sold the hotel, it acquired the name Shri Sagar in 1950. And finally, in 1992, the place was acquired by Sanjeeva Poojari who named it as Central Tiffin Room. When a place has so much history, you will have to visit it, just to inhale air in there and feel the positive vibes.

The hotel is very simple, you would have not bothered to enter if it was not for its popularity. But, I love simple places that are popular. Because, when you see a hotel with such plain ambience, you are sure that the food will shine. CTR in appearance is just like any normal, economic hotel. Plain walls, simple tables and no fancy menu cards. For people who visit the place, the menu is by heart. We just order the benne (butter) Masala Dosa. This is the daddy of all dishes here. Golden brown, glazy and perfectly smooth like the Italian marble toppings of the tables we are eating on, these Dosas are to die for. They are majorly crisp, slightly puffy and melt in the mouth kind of Dosa that you can find nowhere else.

IMG_5991.JPG

Other dishes like the idli, rava idli, kesari bath, poori and khara bath are simply good. They cannot be tagged as outstanding. The major player in this place is the Masala dosa and that is what everyone who comes here orders. Service is swift and courteous.

IMG_5981.JPG

After the food is done, you will have to drink their coffee. Not drinking coffee after tiffin here is like a big taboo. At least for coffee lovers. Because, the coffee of CTR is so good, it can give any star bucks a run for their money any day. And the best part is that all this comes in such less money. This is one place where the value for money is ten times ten on a scale of ten.

CTR is a well-known place and every now and then you can spot a celebrity indulging in a hot, ghee laden masala dosa. From Deepika Padukone to our own Ramya, many stars pay a visit to CTR once in a while. That’s the good thing about food, it treats everyone equally. For this amazing food, and the amazing conversations I have had here with my hubby, I give this place a 4.5 on 5 stars.

It is the sacred month for us Hindus. Also the only month when I try eating healthy vegetarian food. I do not actually miss my kind of food because turning a vegetarian once in a year will open up many opportunities to try something different. So, that is how I came across Enerjuvate.

The name sounded cool, and I had heard some good reviews about the place, so I just dropped in one afternoon to enjoy a quite lunch. The place is located off the Jayanagar main road, just a few yards away from the buzzing bus stand.  Though the café is located in the busy locality, is surprisingly calm and peaceful. I almost thought that they were closed when I entered the place.

The café is spread out on three floors. The ground floor is sort of a welcome area, the first floor consists of a balcony that is made into a dining place with a couple of tables and I didn’t have a chance to see what was on the second floor but heard some noises so thought there was surely some action going on there. This café is a perfect example of how you can run a small café in your house’s balcony. They have made maximum utilization of the space available.

IMG_5624

The ambience is cool and fun. It is especially attractive to the young, college goers who I believe are their major customers. There is a lot of greenery and colors. The seating is simple and comfortable. I chose a corner table that looked out onto the road. The road was small and there was othing interesting to view, but still, a corner table never hurts.

IMG_5621.JPG

As I ordered my food, I received these crispy veggies crackle like thing as a compliment (every customer received it not just me… I am still not famousL). They were made of millet crackles that was topped with onions, tomatoes and sauce. It was a prettier version of our humble masala papad.

IMG_5625

Lunch was veggie zoodle bowl. The waiting period was long. You can avoid the place if you are in a hurry. This one is for people who want to relax, spend some time talking with their friends as they have a long lunch or snack. The zoodle looked attractive. But I can’t say that it tasted very good. It was basically noodles and zucchini in sauces. Along came cranberry chilli toast. I had a tough time chewing the hard toast without embarrassing myself in front of the other people. The dessert was a pretty looking blueberry cheese cake jar. I just loved its appearance though it was too tiny. The blueberry and cream topping were tasty, but the oats cake at the bottom stuck to the jar stubbornly. After much try, I just had to let go of it.

IMG_5670

All in all, it was a different kind of experience with vegan cuisine. The place boasts of fresh, healthy and vegetarian food. Go here if that’s what you want. I give this place a 3 out of 5 stars.

Do you believe in time travel? I do. There is a place in Bangalore that can take you to Rajasthan in few seconds as you enter the place. In fact, there are nine branches of the place all over the city. I have been to two of them, the mantra square, Malleshwaram branch and the Orion mall branch. Rajdhani is an authentic Rajasthani thali restaurant that serves Rajasthani and some Guajarati food. So, if you love these cuisines, then this is your place.

IMG_3288.JPG

I’ll have to give it up to this place for their hospitality. God! Are they even humans? How can they be so nice to their customers? From the moment you step in, they start with the folded hands Namaste, and go on to even assist you in washing your hands before the lunch! They are ever smiling and insist you eat more, just like your granny at home.

IMG_3287.JPG

The ambience is quite cozy and welcoming. It is a perfect setting for a family lunch. The butter milk that came first was tasty. It came in a huge tumbler and I couldn’t drink the entire thing. Then came the thali. Rajdhani is all about this one thali. It consists of many bhaji, vegetables and dal with a variety of Marwari breads. The food is entirely saatvik, so people who prefer spicy food may not like the dishes. Also, as its Rajasthani and Guajarati food, many of the dishes were sweet to taste. The thali is huge and consists of many little bowls containing the several dishes. The entire set up is so cute that I felt content by just looking at the thali.

IMG_20150906_155313.JPG

For me, the experience was new and mediocre. Can’t say the food was mind-blowing, but also can’t berate it by saying it was bad. It surely was a healthy plate of meal, but may be it was not my thali of food. Having said that, I do not regret going here because trying new cuisines is interesting and I just loved the essence of the place. I would give this place a 3 out of 5 stars.

Had heard a lot about this place, so couldn’t wait to go here. It was a Saturday noon. We had run late and it was already their closing time. I called for reservations and the staff was very courteous telling that they would reserve a table.

Tim Tai is one of the many fine eateries that you can find in Koramangala. It is a Deli that serves pan Asian cuisine and that’s what got me interested. The place is very colourful and cheery. Right from the board that’s set up in the beginning to the walls inside the place, everything is so bright and colourful. There is a lot of pink, yellow and green to make the place look fun and interesting. The ambience is surely the USP of this place.

We were given a comfortable table and as it was a Saturday, I was having a vegetarian lunch (sigh!!!) with my sisters. The staff were extra friendly and love places where the people smile, aren’t rude and help you out by suggesting what to eat. This is one such place.

We ordered apricot glazed cauliflower in noodle basket just because it sounded so beautiful. The noodle basket never came, but the cauliflowers were pretty good. They had this sweet tinge from the apricots. Then came the tofu chilli pepper with five spice salt. May be, the name had all the salt and that’s why it was missing in the dish. Could have added some more salt to please our Indian taste buds. For main course there was Thai chilli basil noodles. This thing was very oily. Also the essence of basil was too much. To go with it, we ordered tofu on wilted spinach with hot basil sauce. Again the thing was very oily. Dessert was a simple chocolate walnut brownie with vanilla ice-cream. This was the best thing that I ate that day.

Do not know if we ordered wrong or whether this place is only for non- vegetarian food, but I’ll have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the food. It was way too oily. Should try some seafood the next time. Will give it a 3 stars out of 5.

Our locality was lacking a proper café from many years. Cloud café almost fulfills our wish. Well, almost. This is one place that you can go with your friends, sit for hours, play snooker and eat some junk food. Cloud café is exclusively for youngsters.

The ambience is lively and colourful. The décor is bright and funky. There are cubicles that give you privacy if you want to have a silent lunch. For others who like to have a taste of the view, you can opt for the tables to the left. The place is on the fourth floor, so they do have a glass wall that looks out to our huge city.

IMG_4557

The menu is also designed as per the requirements of the youngsters. There is Italian, Chinese, continental, north Indian and American. We had chicken lollipop which was crispy and delicious. Then came the BBQ chicken wings which had a tinge of sweetness in it. May be they had added honey. The butter chicken curry was a wrong order at a café. But, we were hungry and as south Indians, nothing satiates our hunger as much as rice does. The butter chicken was too mild in flavours and kind of sweetish. It came with plain white rice. At last came the spicy Cajun chicken burger. The burger quite good. We didn’t have the mood for desserts, so I can’t tell how they were.

As the place is very near to our house, I may go there sometime. I give a 3 out of 5 stars. If you live nearby, you can surely visit this place once.
