I love monsoons. It is the time of the year when you can eat the oiliest, unhealthy and fattening food and still don’t regret it. May be it’s the chilly weather, cold breeze or just the boring weekends, you feel like eating everything desi and delicious. And I do not have to separately mention calorie loaded because when I say desi, it is certainly going to throw your diet regime out of the window. But, who is complaining when you have food in front of you?

Last Sunday was a fun outing to the Nandi hills. Surprisingly there was no crowd and it was so much fun. I just love the long rides on the airport road. No traffic, no bumps on the road and the cold wind hitting your face, which is one thing you must certainly try when you are in Bengaluru.

For me, a trip to Nandi hills is never complete without having parathas while coming back. The Indian paratha company is on the service road to your right just before you take a left to get off the main road to go towards the Nandi hills.  I just love the look of that place. It is like straight out of a 1930’s cowboy movie. The all wooden building is so retro, yet so modern. There are seating arrangements both outside and inside the building. We sat inside because it was a bit sunny.

The place is super busy all the time because people tend to come from the city to enjoy their piping hot parathas. This is one place where you get the authentic North Indian parathas, served with pickle and curd. They have a variety of parathas ranging from aloo, cheese, paneer, gobi, mooli and so on. I especially liked their paneer paratha and aloo cheese paratha.

A must try is of course their paratzza, a combination of paratha and pizza. It is the crowd puller in this place. Besides parathas, the place also serves a variety of cold drinks and mocktails. But, the only thing that people are here is for the parathas.

The service is swift, curt and to the point. As the crowd is huge you do not get to sit back and relax if you are here on a weekend. On weekdays you can just relax and enjoy the view, cold drinks and food. The price is on the higher scale. I would give a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

All the vegetarians, hear me out! Here is a place that serves genuine vegetarian food. 1947 is a well-known chain of restaurants that serve you some delectable food that does not contain meat or eggs. The last time we had been to 1947 Rajajinagar branch was to celebrate the completion of 100 days of our marriage (and we still manage to be together!). We had opted for a la carte then, and I’ll have to say that the place seemed a bit expensive for the food it served.

So, when my cousin suggested that we go out for a vegetarian lunch to 1947, I thought there will be nothing new. But, the place proved me wrong. This time we went to the Rajarajeshwari nagar branch. There are five branches of the place in Bangalore – Rajaji nagar, Rajarajeshwari nagar, Malleshwaram, Jayanagar and Banashankari. The place is quite spacious. The décor is minimal and has that ideal “family restaurant” wala feeling. there are some pictures and paintings related to the independence day owing to the place’s name. the overall ambiance is positive. Comfortable chairs, wide tables and enough space to go around filling your plate. Yes, it was a buffet.

When my cousin said it was a buffet, my heart sank. This is because, most of the places in Bangalore (I assume in other places too) do not serve the same kind of food for buffet and a la carte. Whether it is the quality of the food, taste or the presentation, we can see that a la carte beats buffet all the time except for some places. I will have to say that this is one such exception. The place had a decent amount of food on its buffet menu. Though the list was not too long, whatever was presented was actually delicious.

We began with the tomato soup. Though it is the most basic of all the eatables that the hotels can offer, most of them get it wrong. 1947 makes some yummy soups. For the starters, there was hara bhara kebabs, aloo ke tukde, paneer tikka laal mirch. All of them were good. Especially the paneer, it was so soft and succulent that I had two helpings. The chatwala came to each table along with his mobile chaat stall and took orders to serve them then and there. Both the pani puri and sev puri were nice. Then came the cheese macaroni pasta.

Salad section consisted of fruits, vegetables, corn and other salads. I liked the corn and pineapple salad that had mayonnaise sauce in it. For main course there were various indian breads that you will be served according to your preference. We opted for butter kulchas. It was eaten with Kashmiri dum loo, dal makhani, panner butter masala and pindi chole. The chawal ki dawat or the rice menu consisted of a vegetable pulao, white rice with rasam and curd rice that was presented in cute little cups. There was also hakka noodles with chilly sauce in the oriental counter, but we skipped it.

After this hefty dinner, we still managed to taste the desserts. There was kheer, Shahi tukda and rabdi for dessert. We ended the dinner with the flavour of the season – mango ice cream. I have to admit that it was a memorable dinner. Such a wide variety to choose from and each of the food items was very tasty and beautifully presented. I will give a 4 out of 5 stars for this buffet.
