Do you believe in time travel? I do. There is a place in Bangalore that can take you to Rajasthan in few seconds as you enter the place. In fact, there are nine branches of the place all over the city. I have been to two of them, the mantra square, Malleshwaram branch and the Orion mall branch. Rajdhani is an authentic Rajasthani thali restaurant that serves Rajasthani and some Guajarati food. So, if you love these cuisines, then this is your place.

IMG_3288.JPG

I’ll have to give it up to this place for their hospitality. God! Are they even humans? How can they be so nice to their customers? From the moment you step in, they start with the folded hands Namaste, and go on to even assist you in washing your hands before the lunch! They are ever smiling and insist you eat more, just like your granny at home.

IMG_3287.JPG

The ambience is quite cozy and welcoming. It is a perfect setting for a family lunch. The butter milk that came first was tasty. It came in a huge tumbler and I couldn’t drink the entire thing. Then came the thali. Rajdhani is all about this one thali. It consists of many bhaji, vegetables and dal with a variety of Marwari breads. The food is entirely saatvik, so people who prefer spicy food may not like the dishes. Also, as its Rajasthani and Guajarati food, many of the dishes were sweet to taste. The thali is huge and consists of many little bowls containing the several dishes. The entire set up is so cute that I felt content by just looking at the thali.

IMG_20150906_155313.JPG

For me, the experience was new and mediocre. Can’t say the food was mind-blowing, but also can’t berate it by saying it was bad. It surely was a healthy plate of meal, but may be it was not my thali of food. Having said that, I do not regret going here because trying new cuisines is interesting and I just loved the essence of the place. I would give this place a 3 out of 5 stars.

There is something about family dinners. Apart from the fun, love and the interesting conversations, there something else for a foodie like me. You get to try out new places that you are sure of not visiting if it was not for family dinners. Because, when you are going out with the entire family, proximity of the place is as much important if not more as the taste of the food. You cannot imagine to drag them all 15 km to eat the best burger in town. That you have to do alone. And for family dinners, there are places like sip and dine.

Located off the service road in Vijaynagar, this place was quite popular in its early days. I think one of the most important reasons for its success is the lack of other fine dining places nearby. People had to go here. But, the place used to give some great service and delicious food those days. Over time, I can’t help but notice the falling standards.

The place is extended to two floors. Both the floors are pleasantly decorated and have soothing instrumental music playing in the background. The ambience is cosy and welcoming. Although I have heard many of my friends complaining about the behavior of the staff, I have never experienced anything of such kind. The staff were pretty concerned and attentive. We had our seats and ordered our food.

They took quite some time to bring the food. The cocktails were regular and nothing fancy. For starters, we had egg chilly, crispy fried chicken, baby corn Manchurian and chicken 65. The most disappointing thing about their starters is that they all appeared to be same colour. It almost seemed like they used the same colour masala to cook up each of the dishes. The cooks of sip and dine must make the food much more presentable and appealing. Also, please STOP adding so much colour to your food. It is dangerous for the health. Taste wise, nothing was quite extraordinary. The crispy chicken was good though.

Main course was Hyderabadi biryani which was tasty. The other time we had ordered neer dosa which was actually very good along with their egg masala. Their fishes are also well done. We skipped dessert because I have decided I’ll eat desserts only when the menu interests me. Over all, a good place with average food. I will give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Go here when you have no other option.

All the vegetarians, hear me out! Here is a place that serves genuine vegetarian food. 1947 is a well-known chain of restaurants that serve you some delectable food that does not contain meat or eggs. The last time we had been to 1947 Rajajinagar branch was to celebrate the completion of 100 days of our marriage (and we still manage to be together!). We had opted for a la carte then, and I’ll have to say that the place seemed a bit expensive for the food it served.

unnamed

So, when my cousin suggested that we go out for a vegetarian lunch to 1947, I thought there will be nothing new. But, the place proved me wrong. This time we went to the Rajarajeshwari nagar branch. There are five branches of the place in Bangalore – Rajaji nagar, Rajarajeshwari nagar, Malleshwaram, Jayanagar and Banashankari. The place is quite spacious. The décor is minimal and has that ideal “family restaurant” wala feeling. there are some pictures and paintings related to the independence day owing to the place’s name. the overall ambiance is positive. Comfortable chairs, wide tables and enough space to go around filling your plate. Yes, it was a buffet.

IMG_3602

When my cousin said it was a buffet, my heart sank. This is because, most of the places in Bangalore (I assume in other places too) do not serve the same kind of food for buffet and a la carte. Whether it is the quality of the food, taste or the presentation, we can see that a la carte beats buffet all the time except for some places. I will have to say that this is one such exception. The place had a decent amount of food on its buffet menu. Though the list was not too long, whatever was presented was actually delicious.

IMG_3553

We began with the tomato soup. Though it is the most basic of all the eatables that the hotels can offer, most of them get it wrong. 1947 makes some yummy soups. For the starters, there was hara bhara kebabs, aloo ke tukde, paneer tikka laal mirch. All of them were good. Especially the paneer, it was so soft and succulent that I had two helpings. The chatwala came to each table along with his mobile chaat stall and took orders to serve them then and there. Both the pani puri and sev puri were nice. Then came the cheese macaroni pasta.

IMG_3554

IMG_3581

Salad section consisted of fruits, vegetables, corn and other salads. I liked the corn and pineapple salad that had mayonnaise sauce in it. For main course there were various indian breads that you will be served according to your preference. We opted for butter kulchas. It was eaten with Kashmiri dum loo, dal makhani, panner butter masala and pindi chole. The chawal ki dawat or the rice menu consisted of a vegetable pulao, white rice with rasam and curd rice that was presented in cute little cups. There was also hakka noodles with chilly sauce in the oriental counter, but we skipped it.

IMG_3557

IMG_3561

After this hefty dinner, we still managed to taste the desserts. There was kheer, Shahi tukda and rabdi for dessert. We ended the dinner with the flavour of the season – mango ice cream. I have to admit that it was a memorable dinner. Such a wide variety to choose from and each of the food items was very tasty and beautifully presented. I will give a 4 out of 5 stars for this buffet.

Here is a special one. Not because it is any way unique or fancy, but because it is our official family restaurant. My mother in law loves the food here, so we keep going back every time the entire family decides to eat out. There are many reasons why we love Deewar. One, it is very near to our house. Two, they have a clean, hygienic and warm place. Three, they make the best seafood dishes, my husband and brother in law love seafood.

IMG_1259

IMG_0757

This place is nothing over the top or posh. It is a simple, classy restaurant that is family friendly. Simple and comfortable seating arrangement, three floors of seating and different themes on each floor. We love the rooftop, but they do not have an elevator which is a let-down. Light music plays in the background which is soothing.

Their starters are too good. Hara bhara kebab, chicken sholay kebab, chicken lollipop, lemon chicken, French chicken. We make it a point to try a new dish every time. Coming to the sea food, their prawns, fish and other stuff are very delicious. A special mention must be made of their crab ghee roast that we all just love. Silver fish fry, Anjal masala fry, prawn fry and other dishes are fresh, well cooked and tasty. Deewar also presents you with a large variety of mocktails and cocktails. Each one is good in its own way.

IMG-20151104-WA0016

Coming to the main course, again you will be given too many choices. But, don’t forget to try their regional special neer dosa. It is a mangalorean dosa that is thin as a paper. You will lose the count of how many dosas you ate when it is combined with their appetizing egg masala or fish curry. Then, biryani is also a nice thing to try here.

Desserts are the usual stuff. You can try hot chocolate fudge or caramel custard. If you are planning a quiet family dinner, this should be on top of your list. I give a 4 out of 5 stars because of sentimental reasons.

I was intending to visit this place since long back. And finally, I went there last month with my sister. How I regret not going earlier. This is one place that you ought to go to if you love Parsi food. The place is a demonstration of Parsi culture. The ambiance, food, staff and the drinks are all associated with Parsi culture and people.

IMG_0983

The place has an interesting entrance where in many dabbas are tangled to the handles of a cycle. It reminds you of the Dabbawalas of Mumbai. The ambiance inside is no different. It takes you back to the old Amchi Mumbai. Like a film set from a couple of decades back, the hotel is colourful, fun, interesting and Bollywoodish. Old Hindi songs are played and it instantly relaxes you. The staff is friendly and will help you pick the best dishes in the strange looking menu. Most of the food items on the menu were alien to me and if it’s your first time, you will certainly be caught off-guard.

The drinks we ordered were raspberry soda and ice cream soda. I’ll have to say that I liked both the drinks. They were unique and yummy. Choosing food took us some time and after much scrutiny, we decided on chicken chilli cheese pav, chicken Farcha and Bambaiyya chicken biryani. I will have to agree that each one of these Parsi and Iranian food items was just mind-blowing. They were all well-cooked, tasty, spicy and delectable. By the end of the meal, I and my sister were so full that we did not want to eat desserts.

But, I never skip desserts, as I consider it a crime. So, we ordered mixed berry trifle and Toblerone mousse. I will have to say that the mousse just won the competition. It was so delicious and fulfilling. I don’t know that if it is a norm, but we got two mousses when we ordered one. But who is complaining?

Sodabottle openerwala is a unique dining experience and I intend to go back again someday very soon. The place gets a 4.5 on a scale of 5. But, somehow, I felt it was a bit expensive.

Bangalore is a fascinating city. It is like a drug – addictive, thrilling and always gets you high. Living in Bangalore has its own perks. One such thing is the presence of some of the nicest eat outs that you can find in the country. They are so cool in ambience and consistent in taste. When I talk about good places to eat, I cannot help but mention Hakuna Matata. This place is one of my favourites. And it is one of the few places that me and my husband both agree with (trust me, we do not do that often).

1

Hakuna Matata means “no worries” in Swahili. They named the place so probably because it is a wonderful place where you will forget all your worries. It is located in the crowded area of j p nagar. But, surprisingly, the place is very vast and spacious. You can just drive in, park your vehicle and walk into the hotel. The building is open and there is free movement of air, light and people. You can also opt for the outdoor seating. We sat under the star during our first visit, but that was in the evening. This time, we were there for lunch, so we chose a corner table on the ground floor which was a no smoking floor.

2

The ambience is raw and jungle kind of a thing. There are bamboo tables and chairs. There is wood and bamboo art on the wall. It’s simple, yet pleasing. But, what is liked the most about the place is its food. It is absolutely mind blowing. They are very consistent in their taste and hygiene. We have been here a couple of times and every time, the food fantastic. The staff is friendly and courteous.

3

We ordered crispy chilli vegetables, paneer satay, dragon chicken and shredded crispy chilli chicken for starters. Each and every starter was tasty and we gorged on every last bit of it. The first time we had been here, we had ordered chicken biryani because the staff suggested it. Trust me, I was very skeptical about it. hakuna matata and chicken biryani? Somehow, the names didn’t go very well together. But believe me, the biryani was mind blowing. The chicken in the rice was so well cooked, juicy and spicy. The rice had all the necessary flavours of Indian spices. So, whenever one of our friends go out here, we recommend their biryani very strongly. The vegetable Szechwan fried rice was also tasty.

Winters are incomplete without midnight snacks. The cold nights accompanied by constant midnight cravings can never let you sleep in peace. For all the fellow foodies who love to binge on some street food during the late hours of the night, there is only one place for you – Sagar hotel. The two storied white building looks simple, plain and old fashioned. But that is exactly opposite of what you will feel about the food served here. The crowd in front of the hotel begins to form at seven and will continue until twelve in the night. Unlike other fine dine restaurants, people do not wait to get into the hotel. They just enjoy their food on the street and it is fun!

For starters, this place is not just any restaurant. It is an experience. So, if you are in a hurry and just want to grab some lunch, skip the village. Because when you are in the village, you will want to spend your entire evening here. Such is the ambiance of this wonderful place. As you climb the escalator for the sixth floor of the central mall, you see some bright colors and props that promise you a wonderful evening full of excitement. We could not resist taking a couple of pictures before we entered the place. And as soon as we entered, we were in a whole new world!

img_20161126_192736
village the soul of india

It was like we time traveled to one of those dhabas on the outskirts of Delhi. So colorful, so vibrant and so very desi. The ambiance is one thing that you will love about this place. As it was our first visit to the place, we had a complimentary tarot card session with an expert. He told some annoying things about me, so my husband still vouches about the truthfulness of the tarot at village. The cuisines served are Rajasthani, Gujarati, Maharastrian, north Indian and south Indian. However, we then drank the welcome drink which was a rose flavored milk. It was good. Then we tried out the chats like pani puri, aloo tikka, sev puri which were also good. But, to be frank, we girls were interested in taking pictures in this beautiful place than eating the food.

img_20161126_194925
the live food counters

The place is large and there are some quirky stuff all over. The food is actually laid out in counters that seem like street vendors and road side shops. Our next stop was at the bhaji stall. We had some piping hot aloo and mirchi bajhi which were the best thing in the place. The dosa was not very tasty and I left it untouched in my plate.

the roti counter

A jail like room is where you get the fresh rotis on order. You can also get hot, juicy jalebis at this counter. The main course consisted of masala khichdi, kadi, dal fry, aloo methi, steamed rice and other stuff. I will have to say that I did not enjoy main course as much as the starters. Finally, for desserts there were gulab jamoon, kheer and plain vanilla ice cream cones.

img_20161126_195606

As we had our dinner, we also participated in some fun activities like dandiya, musical chair and the puppet show. I had a feeling that we were in some village fair. It was truly a wonderful experience. I would rate the ambiance, service and place with a 5 on 5 but the food would get only a 3.5 on 5.
